Types of Laboratory Analysis on Metals
Laboratory analyses are divided into different categories based on the investigation objectives: chemical analysis, mechanical testing, metallographic tests and non-destructive testing.
1. Chemical Analysis
They allow determining the chemical composition of a metallic alloy, verifying the presence and percentages of constituent elements. Main methods:
- Optical emission spectrometry (OES): Identifies chemical elements in the metal through analysis of light emitted by the sample.
- Mass spectrometry (ICP-MS): Analyzes the presence of element traces with extreme precision.
- XRF analysis (X-ray fluorescence): Rapid method to identify the composition of elements present in the sheet metal.
2. Mechanical Testing
They evaluate the mechanical characteristics of the metal, such as strength, hardness and elasticity. Most common tests:
- Tensile test: Measures the metal’s resistance to failure under load.
- Hardness test (Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers): Determines resistance to penetration of a hard body.
- Impact test (Charpy or Izod): Evaluates the metal’s ability to absorb energy before fracture.
- Bending test: Analyzes the material’s ability to deform without breaking.
3. Metallographic Analysis
They allow examining the internal structure of the metal to identify defects, heat treatments and processing quality. Techniques used:
- Optical microscopy: Analyzes the metallic grain structure to evaluate homogeneity and defects.
- Scanning electron microscopy (SEM): Studies surface morphology with very high resolution.
- Microhardness analysis: Allows verifying hardness on very small sections of material.
4. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
These tests allow examining the quality of sheet metal without altering or damaging it. Most used techniques:
- Penetrant testing (PT): Identifies surface cracks and porosity.
- Ultrasonic testing (UT): Detects internal defects and material discontinuities.
- Industrial radiography (RX): Provides a detailed image of the sheet metal’s internal structure.
- Magnetic particle testing (MT): Identifies surface and sub-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials.
