Main Types of Heat Treatments

1. Annealing

Annealing is a heat treatment used to reduce hardness and increase ductility of the metal, improving its workability. The process consists of heating the material to a high temperature, maintaining it at that temperature for a certain time and then cooling it slowly.

2. Quenching

3. Tempering

4. Hardening and Tempering (Quenching + Tempering)

Hardening and tempering is a combined treatment that involves quenching followed by tempering. This process balances hardness and toughness, making the metal more resistant to impact and mechanical fatigue.

5. Carburizing

Carburizing is a treatment that enriches the steel surface with carbon, increasing surface hardness without compromising core toughness. This process is followed by quenching and tempering.

6.Nitriding

Nitriding introduces nitrogen into the surface layers of the metal, creating an extremely hard surface resistant to wear without the need for subsequent quenching.

7.Normalizing

Normalizing is a heat treatment similar to annealing but with air cooling, useful for eliminating internal stresses and improving structural uniformity of the material.
